send return, 2023
︎ solo exhibition | sound & installation
'send return' (2023) is a solo exhibition about blurring boundaries, navigating softness, and negotiating fear. The work includes a large metal floor installation, two digital paintings, and a sound work. The gallery floor is covered in white vinyl to play off the large white walls. In this work, Cheng explores the intricacies of the inner self, constant fears about the danger of sharp metal objects, and an obsession with their glamorous and seductive textures. Emotions and conflicts between these feelings expand into visual and auditory experiences.
The exhibition featured a large-scale ribbon sculpture made of metal mesh, crafted with zip ties and resin, titled 'forced adaptation' (2023). This central piece was complemented by two aluminum prints of Cheng’s digital paintings, 'feel the same thing' (2023) and 'high' (2023). Additionally, a sound piece explored the interplay of audio and physical materials, injecting life and dynamism into the sculpture and prints. Audiences were invited to immerse themselves fully - walking on vinyl-covered concrete floors with shoes off and discovering resin drops scattered across walls and floors, resembling teardrops and sweat. Using flashlights, visitors could uncover the intricacies hidden in each artwork.
Taking 'send return' (2023) beyond traditional boundaries, Cheng collaborated with photographer Peidi Z to initiate 'RIBBON ATTACK' (2023), an experimental interactive performance. Two performers adorned in metal garments, specially designed by Tiffany W for this project, interacted with the installation. Their movements were captured in photographs, which Cheng later digitally reimagined, blending her digital painting methods with the essence of the captured performance.
