who’s to say what’s real, 2022

︎ solo exhibition

‘who’s to say what’s real’ (2022) is a solo exhibition featuring installation, digital UV prints, and a sound piece. The gallery space was kept in complete darkness for the duration of the exhibit, with viewers given flashlights to explore the works for an intimate and interactive experience.

Two UV prints on Dibond, ‘i can feel my mind game speaking on the truth’ (2022) and ‘if not now when’ (2022) were central to the exhibition. The reflection of light on the smooth metal surfaces transformed the pieces into something dynamic, creating a sense of floating in space. This interplay of light and material expanded the works into an ultimate, variable dimension. The contrast between the soft, painterly brushstrokes and the rigid metallic backgrounds created an intense visual tension, drawing attention to the layers of depth and texture. The piece ‘erase’ (2022) is a digital recreation that merges two of Cheng’s real-life sculptures into a single form, presented against a blurry Polaroid background. The black sculpture in the composition is ‘concentrate(d) pyramid’ (2022), a balloon pyramid, while the natural-toned sculpture is ‘concentrate(d) pink eye’ (2022), a hanging piece tied up with chains and zip ties.
